2006-09-20: School Committee 2006 summer activities
This newsletter contains information on:

1. Short term repairs at the High School
2. Added members for the High School Building Committee
3. Long range strategic planning

The Committee welcomes community input by phone, email, letter, or attendance at public meetings and forums (schedule).

1. Short term repairs at the High School
At the last Town Meeting, the Town appropriated $50,000 to hire an independent facilities expert to help us identify which items need to be addressed immediately, prioritize these needs, develop a plan, and begin implementation of some of these repairs. Turner Construction was hired as the facilities expert. Turner recommended that certain repairs be made to ensure the safety of our students and staff and to provide a facility that is accessible to all students. As a result, during the summer months and continuing into the fall such repairs are being made.

2. Added members for the High School Building Committee
At the same Town Meeting, the Town voted to add up to four new members to the High School Building Committee. A subcommittee, comprised of two Selectmen, two Finance Committee members and two School Committee members, is in the process of interviewing candidates for these positions. In addition, during the summer, the School Committee submitted its Statement of Interest to the Massachusetts State Building Authority, the first step in securing state aid for the revitalization and modernization of the High School.

3. Long range strategic planning
Later in the summer, the School Committee brought in an outside consultant to help facilitate the Committees discussion regarding long-term strategic planning. The Committee agreed to work together to answer three core strategic questions 1) What should our educational mission, goals and priorities be going forward? 2) How will we finance our educational needs over the long term? and 3) How can we enhance community support for our educational goals?
