This newsletter contains information on:

1. General Forum presentation
2. Long Range Strategic Planning (LRSP) next steps
3. MCAS analysis

The Committee welcomes community input by phone, email, letter,
and attendance at public meetings and forums (schedule).

1. General Forum presentation
At our General Forum on November 20th, we presented an overview of the issues the Committee is currently addressing, including:
  • FY08 Budget
  • Negotiations
  • High School project
  • Administrator searches
  • Fees
  • Joint Facilities Manager position
  • MCAS results
  • State Aid
  • Long Range Strategic Planning process
The presentation is available here.

2. Long Range Strategic Planning (LRSP) next steps
As part of the Committees Long Range Strategic Planning process, the Superintendent and the School Committee have selected 8 goals for initial consideration. They include:
  • Determine the districts mission, goals, and priorities
  • Develop measures to determine mission success
  • Establish design for and approval of HS facility
  • Negotiate contract that jointly benefits teachers, students, and the community
  • Establish and institute annual long range strategic planning process
  • Improve process for School Committee to guide and evaluate superintendent
  • Develop supplemental funding sources
  • Enhance community support
At the forum, we asked the public to provide feedback regarding these prioritized goals by either speaking at the forum or by completing a survey distributed that evening. If you are interested in offering your comments, the survey can be accessed on our home page.

Later in the meeting, the School Committee began to establish goal teams for the 8 prioritized goals mentioned above. Each goal team will include a school administrator, a School Committee representative, and possibly a community member, a teacher, and/or a student. In some cases, such goals teams have already been established and are underway (for instance, the High School Building Committee and the negotiation team). The goals that are in need of teams include:
  • Determine the districts mission and develop measures to determine mission success
  • Establish and institute annual long range strategic planning process, including setting goals and priorities
  • Develop supplemental funding sources
  • Enhance community support
The Committee would like to invite any community member who is interested in participating on one of these goal teams to contact Heather Pineault, School Committee Chair, at heather.a.pineault.87 @ alum.dartmouth.org or 508-358-9665. The work of the goal team will be to codify the current approach for that goal, gather input from various stakeholders as appropriate, develop a proposed strategy and corresponding measures for moving forward, and present its recommendation to the School Committee and Superintendent.

3. MCAS analysis
After the forum, Cyndy Dunham, our Assistant Superintendent, presented a summary of the latest and historical MCAS test results as well as the analysis the curriculum leaders conducted at all grade levels. A copy of the full report can be accessed here.

Our next meetings are scheduled for Monday, November 27th at 7:00pm (primarily an executive session to discuss the upcoming negotiations) and Monday, December 4th at 7:30pm, both in the School Committee meeting room on the second floor of the Town Building (full meeting schedule).

Thank you for your attention,
