No experience needed - this is a morning class being led by Nathan Zhao, a Wayland High School junior with interests in journalism, creative writing, and public speaking. He wants to give back to the Wayland school community "that has allowed me to thrive here in Wayland."

Nathan also wants to help middle school students prepare for the journalism opportunities awaiting them at Wayland High School.

Yoga for Children Grades K - 2

TIME and DATES:  to be determined

DESCRIPTION:  Children learn yoga poses, build confidence, and have fun. Techniques used include calm breathing, stories, movement, team-building, mindful moments and games. This program has been very successful at Loker School since its debut this academic year.

THE INSTRUCTOR:  Amy has been teaching yoga and mindfulness to children in a variety of settings since 2010. She is also a social worker in the Cambridge Public School district. Check out her website at: heartsandmindsyoga.com.

             Beehive Art Mixed Media Workshop

GRADES:  Kindergarten through Grade 3

LOCATION: 
 Art Room at Loker School

DESCRIPTION:  Beehive Art Studio of Wayland brings its creative workshop to Loker School for an after-school art opportunity. Children explore with a wide range of colorful mediums and techniques. They explore book and printmaking, construct sculptures and mobiles, design spin art, and make miniatures and toys.

A workshop session is usually offered at Loker two or three times a year, with each round of classes consisting of six or eight weeks.

DESCRIPTION: Volleyball is offered in the spring at Happy Hollow. Pam Kainz leads this introductory program for boys and girls in Grades 4 and 5. A six-week class, it is a fun way to learn the fundamental skills of volleyball. You will learn and practice forearm passing, setting, and hitting and serving.

Each week, a new skill is introduced, and there are fun drills and games. To help participants understand volleyball rules and scoring, they are explained throughout the clinics.

GRADES: 4 and 5, boys and girls
minimum: 8, maximum, 14
CLASS TIME: 2:05 pm  (upon dismissal)  - 3:15 pm

STEM classes debuted in Wayland schools in the fall of 2015 to great success. STEM classes offer fun-filled and exciting programs focused on building and sustaining interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. The goal is to introduce these concepts at an early age through enjoyable and fun activities that incorporate STEM concepts into play or everyday activities.  Children explore with LEGO Bricks, Kapla blocks, K'nex education sets, Snap Circuits, and other STEM toys. The key notion is that children learn best when they are having fun.

      Grade Five Photography Club with Mr. Gees

Mr. Gees offers Photography each year. Classes fill very quickly, so don't wait to enroll. In 2017, 39 children signed up for the 12 spots offered. Mr. Gees accommodated everyone by leading the class for three different sessions.


DESCRIPTION:  No experience needed for this Club, and digital cameras are provided. Learn how to compose a picture, have proper light, and even edit with  I-Photo on the computer. You'll be published in the Wayland Town Crier and be part of an exhibit at the Wayland Town Library.

INSTRUCTOR: Mr. Gees has his own studio in Natick, and leads photography clubs for  elementary and middle school students in Wayland.
