"Lights, Camera, Communicate: Be the Star of Your Own Show" at Wayland Middle School

For middle school students, this program offers a rare opportunity to create and host a short talk show. They start with a topic of high interest to them, choose a guest or guests, and take the first steps toward developing a confident, on-air personality.

Participants gain:

Ability to Communicate with Confidence
Discovery of a Passion and What Is Important to Them
Greater Excitement and Openness About Learning

Presented by MindsetGo and led by Mark Altman

Mark Altman, a Boston native, is the founder and trainer of MindsetGo, which offers programming for both adults and students. Along with being an entrepreneur, he is a freelance sports reporter for the Associated Press, covering home games of the Boston Red Sox, Boston Celtics, and Boston Bruins.

This year there will be programs offered at both Claypit Hill and Loker Schools with two joint concerts culminating each of the two semesters. Ms. Patrice Buckley - an experienced music teacher and choral director - will continue to lead the groups.

Fee:  $200 per session

Claypit Hill School, Strings Room - 3 pm - 4 pm 
Tuesdays, Session 1 October 4, 2016, through January 10, 2017
Session 2 - January 31, 2017, through May 9, 2017

Loker School Theatre - 2 pm - 3  pm  
Wednesdays, Session 1, October 5, 2016 - January 11, 2017
Session 2, February 1 through May 10, 2017

Please Note:  Families may choose whichever location works for them. There is a 15-minute travel time built into the schedule to accommodate those traveling from other schools.

LOCATION: 
 Little Theatre at Loker School
TIME:  Wednesdays, 2 pm - 3 pm (Loker students come to theatre upon dismissal)  Travel time is built in for students coming from Happy Hollow or Claypit Hill - 2:15 pm actual start time

Students from all three elementary schools may attend the Loker or Claypit Hill program - there will be a joint concert (with joint rehearsals) at the end of each session.

Learning another language is one of the best ways to become part of the global community. Studying a language at a young age is advantageous since children are most receptive to acquiring a new language when young.
This long-established program (1992)  opens up the world of global languages through hands-on, exciting activities that expose young learners to the language and culture of other parts of the world.

STEM for KIDS, STEM Beginnings, Grades K-2

DESCRIPTION:
STEM classes debuted in Wayland schools in the fall of 2015 to great success. STEM classes offer fun-filled and exciting programs focused on building and sustaining interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. The goal is to introduce these concepts at an early age through enjoyable and fun activities that incorporate STEM concepts into play or everyday activities.  Children explore with LEGO Bricks, Kapla blocks, K'nex education sets, Snap Circuits, and other STEM toys. The key notion is that children learn best when they are having fun.

New activities in each round of classes.

GRADES:  K-2

TIME:  3 pm - 4:15 pm (Class starts at 3:15 - students come directly upon dismissal and may bring a peanut-free snack to eat before activities begin.)

Develop all of the elements of a live talk show so you can provide fun and interesting commentary as you step into your role as a guest or co-host. Pick your co-hosts, guests and how you want your show to look, sound and feel. Have a blast expressing your ideas while learning how to build an audience of fans and followers.

DESCRIPTION: "Lights, Camera, Communicate:
Be the Star of Your Own Show"    

Through this program, the young adolescent explores a personal interest and hosts a short, live talk show with peers or others as special guests.
As a host, the "star" will demonstrate excellent face-to-face communication skills, share excitement about a passion - whether it be fashion, sports, art, or more - and through hands-on activities, tap into greater excitement and openness about learning.
