Minutes - Wayland School Committee
Special Session  November 16, 2010  

A Special Session of the Wayland School Committee was held on Tuesday, November 16, 2010, at 7:00 P.M. in the Wayland Middle School gym prior to the Special Town Meeting.

Present were:
Dr. Louis Jurist, Chair
Mrs. Barb Fletcher, Vice Chair
Dr. Malcolm Astley
Ms. Beth Butler

Also:
Dr. Gary A. Burton
Superintendent of Schools

Chair Louis Jurist convened the regular meeting at 7:10 P.M.

1. Comments or Written Statements from the Public:
There were no public comments or written statements.

2. Superintendent Search Update:
Dr. Jurist led a discussion of the selection of 6 individuals to serve on the Superintendent Search Committee, as selected by Dr. Kinney and Dr. Jurist at their November 11, 2010 sub-committee meeting. Those asked to serve on this Committee are as follows:
1. Andrea Armstrong
2. Betsey Brigham
3. Tricia Clifford
4. Robert Gordon
5. Foster Wright
6. Len Glick

This Search Committee is scheduled to meet for the first time on November 22, 2010 with Future Management Systems consultant Richard Warren in the School Committee Room, while the School Committee meets in the Large Hearing Room for their fall public forum and meeting. Both meetings will be posted with the Town Clerk.

There was a general discussion as to whether this group met the criteria established by the School Committee to ensure balanced and diverse representation of the community. Dr. Jurist assured the others that the criteria were considered in the selection process.

Upon a motion duly made by Ms. Butler, seconded by Dr. Astley, the School Committee voted unanimously
(4-0) to appoint the 6 individuals selected by Dr. Jurist and Dr. Kinney to the Superintendent Search Committee.

Mrs. Fletcher also asked Mr. Bill Garr of Future Management Systems would be mailing the Leadership Profile to the Committee shortly.

3. The Abrahams Group Audit:
Mrs. Fletcher informed the Committee of her attendance at the management audit meeting on November 15, 2010 and asked that all read the Interim Abrahams Report. This will be discussed after the Public Forum on November 22 as an agenda item. Mrs. Fletcher advised that the Abrahams report contains preliminary
recommendations on budget reporting and controls. She will be meeting with Geoff MacDonald to review this report.

4. Other Business:
Dr. Jurist asked that the public forum portion of the November 22 meeting be scheduled from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Dr. Burton told the Committee that Wayland was hosting the METCO Superintendents’ meeting on November 17.

5. Adjournment:
Upon a motion duly made by Mrs. Fletcher, seconded by Ms. Butler, the Committee voted unanimously (4-0) to adjourn the Special Session at 7:30 P.M.
