Professional Development

  • The World Language and Classics department at Wayland High School offers professional development for teachers seeking language acquisition workshops. Our focus for these workshops aligns with ACTFL’s pedagogy around proficiency-based teaching. Some of the workshops we have offered in the past are:

    • ACTFL’s Mary Jo DiBiase-Lubrano on MOPI familiarization
    • The Creative Classroom’s Kara Parker and Megan Smith on culture to develop authentic lessons 
    • The Creative Classroom’s Kara Parker on Assessing Progress in the World Language Class
    • ACTFL’s  Karen Tharrington on Bringing language performance to the Next Level
    • ACTFL’s Donna Clementi on Proficiency-based teaching

Course #1: Strategies to Enhance Instruction for English Language Learners in the Classroom
In this course, participants will review and explore teaching strategies to support English language learners. Participants will also explore technology resources that can support English language learners within the classroom. This course will satisfy the re-certification requirement of 15 hours of ELL-related professional development. For more information or a complete syllabus:

Course #2:  Engaging All Students with Differentiated Instruction 

Participants in this course will explore many strategies and tools that will help them to plan lessons so that all students are appropriately challenged and supported. Participants will also explore technology tools that will facilitate instruction of students with diverse learning needs and strategies to differentiate assessment. This course will satisfy the re-certification requirement of 15 hours of SPED-related professional development. For more information or a complete syllabus:

To Register:  Please use your district email address to access these no-cost to you courses.  The registration form has been programmed to allow you to proceed at no cost, as long as you use your district email address. Once you submit your registration, a "course key" will be emailed to you that will enable you to access your course.

Free to you. Sponsored by WPS as part of a collaborative project with TEC and TEC-member districts.

PDPs:  These courses are web-based, and self-paced, available to you to access at your convenience. Each course offers 15 PDPs for which a certificate will be generated for those participants who score 80% or better on the course assessments. There will be a required project for you to complete and maintain, along with the certificate, to use a as proof that you satisfied the re-certification requirements.
