Grade 4

In fourth grade, students work use their reading skills to summarize, ask questions, infer, and make connections between texts. They continue to increase their stamina during independent reading and use a wide variety of sources to learn about their world.

Students continue their daily writer's workshop, where they create true and fictional stories, opinions, and organize information about a topic culminating in a research project. They also learn to write through Self-Regulated Strategy Development (SRSD), a writing approach that enables students to take charge of how they self-regulate their thought processes while writing.

We continue to work with students to participate in collaborative conversations and demonstrate the standard English grammar in speaking and in writing.

Our spelling program is Words Their Way, which differentiates spelling instruction based on students' own developmental stage. Through this program, students progress through the 5 stages of spelling development through explicit teacher instruction and student exploration of spelling patterns.

Massachusetts has adopted the Common Core State Standards, which has designated specific skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening, and language at each grade level.
