Wayland Public Schools Professional Development
At Wayland Public Schools we believe that all educators benefit from active engagement in ongoing learning as part of their continuous growth and development. Education is an ever-evolving field. Staying current in pedagogical advances and cutting-edge content aligned to state and national standards allows educators to improve their craft to maximize student outcomes for our diverse learners. To support these efforts the District provides educators with a broad range of learning opportunities including formal coursework, access to conferences, and district-led professional development opportunities that include (but are not limited to):
-
Wednesday inservice learning sessions aligned to District and School improvement goals,
-
teacher-led staff development courses,
-
book groups, and
-
individualized learning pathways.
Additionally, collaboration is a priority in Wayland. Time is built into the infrastructure of educator’s schedules to provide opportunities for teachers to plan together and share best practices, strategies, and resources. These include (but are not limited to)
-
time with mentors, instructional coaches, curriculum leaders, department heads, and curriculum directors
-
time for PLC’s (Professional Learning Communities) to collaborate,
-
departmental and cluster meeting time to strategize at the secondary level,
-
and ongoing informal conversations between educators.
Cultural Proficiency Requirement
Cultural Proficiency Requirement - We are committed to creating an educational environment that celebrates, challenges, and supports diverse learners. Wayland’s Cultural Proficiency Requirement outlines the rationale and details around the professional development that educators new to Wayland need to complete in their first three years of employment (required of educators hired after June 30, 2021 - recommended for all):
Excerpt:
“It is a central tenet of Wayland Public Schools that cultural and linguistic diversity benefits our community of learners. We also acknowledge that policies, practices and expectations mirror the norms and practices of the dominant culture, which can negatively affect learning and school belonging for students who do not share the same background.
Teachers are our most valuable asset to create culturally responsive learning environments that promote all students’ deeper learning. Developing the teacher mindset, knowledge, and capacity to help children grow their brain power, competence and confidence to tackle complex learning tasks, does not happen overnight. Culturally responsive teaching is a mindset rather than a set of tools.”
