Regular Session January 19, 2010
A Regular Session of the Wayland School
Committee was held on Tuesday, January 19, 2010, at 7:00 P.M. in the
School Committee Room of the Wayland Town Building.
Present were:

Chair Louis Jurist convened the regular meeting at 7:06 P.M.
1. Comments and Written Statements from the Public:
• A community member commented on the class size in art and
questioned why the entire art position at the high school was not
restored.
• A community member asked why several lines in the Superintendent’s 2004 evaluation were redacted.
2. Discussion re: the Release of Materials for the Superintendent’s Annual Evaluation:
Mr. Dieffenbach gave a brief history and implications of the
result of the recent court ruling and the Committee discussed the
release of comments and possible future steps that will be used in the
Superintendent’s annual evaluation.
Upon a motion duly made by Mr. Dieffenbach, seconded by Mrs.
Fletcher, the School Committee voted unanimously (5-0) to release the
individual written evaluation comments from school committee members
from the Superintendent’s evaluations 2005, 2007, 2008, and 2009.
Mrs. Cohen will review the documents to redact.
An additional request was made for copies of the invoices from
the School Committee’s attorney. The Committee’s consensus was to
inform the individual of the cost of complying with the request.
3. FinCom Package for FY’11 Budget:
Mrs. Fletcher reviewed the information that will be given to the
FinCom tonight and the format for the presentation next week.
The FinCom requested information related to the Capital
technology request. Mr. Dieffenbach will work with Leisha Simon and
the Technology Taskforce to compile the requested information.
The School Committee discussed the content of a budget summary for the community and a communication to the listserv.
4. Approval of Accounts Payable & Payroll Warrants:
Upon a motion duly made by Mrs. Cohen, seconded by Mr.
Dieffenbach, the School Committee voted unanimously (5-0) to approve
the following warrants:
• School Department Accounts Payable warrant, dated 1/19/2010, in the amount of $464,293.23
5. Acceptance of Gifts:
Upon a motion duly made by Mr. Dieffenbach, seconded by Mrs. Fletcher, the School Committee voted unanimously
(5-0) to accept the following gift with gratitude:
• A donation in the amount of $1,000 from the Doyon Family Fund to the WHS Robotics Program.
6. Approval of Minutes:
Upon a motion duly made by Mr. Dieffenbach, seconded by Mrs. Fletcher, the School Committee voted unanimously
(5-0) to approve the following minutes, as amended:
• Regular Session of January 11, 2010
• Regular Session of January 14, 2010
• Executive Session of January 14, 2010
7. Comments from the Public:
A community member stated he would provide committee members with
an article. He commented on more holistic measures of success aside
from standardized tests. He also commented on negotiations related to
the perceived sacrifice by the teachers relative to their current
compensation packages.
8. Executive Session:
Upon a motion duly made by Mr. Dieffenbach, seconded by Mr. Astley, the Committee voted unanimously
(5-0) in a roll call vote to convene in Executive Session at 8:23
P.M. for the purpose of matters pertaining to Collective Bargaining, as
set forth in Section 23B of G.L. Ch. 39.

The Chair announced that the Committee would reconvene in Open
Session immediately following the adjournment of the Executive Session
for adjournment purposes only.
9. Adjournment:
Upon a motion by Mrs. Fletcher, seconded by Mr. Dieffenbach, the
Committee voted unanimously (5-0) to adjourn the Regular Session at 8:44
P.M.
